Coding Error Sends Millions Of Computers Into Limbo

CrowdStrike's Faulty Software Update Causes Massive Windows Outage

Coding Error Sends Millions of Computers into Limbo

A coding error in a software update from security giant CrowdStrike has caused a massive overnight outage, affecting millions of Windows computers worldwide. The update was intended to patch vulnerabilities in CrowdStrike's Falcon sensor program, but instead caused the program to crash, rendering systems unusable.

Testing and Validation System Failed

According to CrowdStrike, the testing and validation system that approved the faulty update appeared to function normally for other updates. However, in this instance, it failed to detect the error, leading to the widespread outage.

Thousands of Systems Impacted

Microsoft, which partnered with CrowdStrike for the Falcon sensor program, has released a tool to fix the bug. However, until the tool is widely deployed, the outage is likely to continue affecting thousands of systems.

Update: CrowdStrike Responds

In a statement, CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz said, "We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our customers. We are working around the clock to resolve the issue and restore full functionality to all affected systems as quickly as possible."
