Texas Pipeline Explodes, Catches Fire in Houston Suburb, Forcing Evacuations

A massive explosion and fire at a natural gas pipeline in a Houston suburb forced evacuations and closed major roadways Sunday, authorities said.

The blast occurred around 11 a.m. in the Greenspoint area of north Harris County, near the intersection of FM 1960 and Aldine Westfield Road, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The fire sent a huge plume of black smoke into the air that was visible for miles. At least one home was destroyed, and several others were damaged.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. However, authorities said they believe it may have been caused by a construction crew that hit the pipeline while digging.

The fire was brought under control by about 3 p.m., but the evacuation order remained in effect for several hours as crews worked to repair the pipeline and ensure there were no further hazards.

The explosion and fire caused major traffic disruptions in the area. FM 1960 and Aldine Westfield Road were both closed in both directions for several hours.

The American Red Cross has set up a shelter for those who have been displaced by the explosion and fire.
